On the fifth day of the month of Shravan, the Nag Panchami was celebrated by devotees keeping a day long fast apart from visiting temples and anthills and offering pujas.

At the temples, milk, honey, vermilion, flowers and sweets were offered to the idols of serpent deities and

prayers offered to Nag Devta, seeking protection and prosperity.

The Hindu festival honors wildlife and reflects an ancient ecological respect for living creatures. Snakes are deeply tied to Lord Shiva, who wears a serpent around his neck, and Lord Vishnu, who rests on Sheshnag.
