Musi rejuvenation vital for Greater Hyderabad flood control, says Revanth Reddy

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy stressed that the rejuvenation of the River Musi was the only viable solution for effective flood management in Greater Hyderabad.

He said measures must be initiated to revamp all systems and infrastructure to withstand heavy rains in the city. To ensure normal life is not disrupted, development works should be undertaken immediately to provide a permanent solution, the Chief Minister said during a review meeting here on Friday.

The city recorded about 15 cm of rainfall on Thursday. The current drainage network and roads can handle no more than five



cm of rainfall, while sudden downpours of nearly 20 cm have been lashing the city, he added.

Since June this season, the GHMC area has received 16 percent more rainfall compared to normal levels. Irrespective of rain intensity, steps must be taken to prevent waterlogging and inundation of low-lying areas, the Chief Minister said.

“To achieve this, the River Musi rejuvenation project must be taken up immediately. Restoring the 55-km stretch of the River Musi will help keep catchment areas safe and prevent flooding in various low-lying parts of the city,” Revanth Reddy emphasized.
