A 23-year-old private company employee from Manikonda lost Rs 3.28 lakh to a racket after an unknown woman befriended him on a dating application, secretly recorded an intimate video call and blackmailed him with threats of circulating the footage on social media.
According to the complaint lodged with the Cyberabad cybercrime police, the woman appeared in a state of undress and convinced the victim to remove his clothes during their call.
She captured screenshots and recorded the video before threatening to upload the intimate content and circulate it
among his Instagram followers unless he paid money.
Fearing public humiliation, the victim transferred Rs 3,28,500 to bank accounts provided by the fraudster.
The accused then demanded an additional `1.70 lakh, repeatedly called the victim, and shared some photographs with a few of his Instagram followers.
The victim then approached the Cyberabad cybercrime sleuths who registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the case. Police were probing the role of the WhatsApp number and Instagram account used by the suspect.
