A 30-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband at Golthanda village of Tirumalayapalem mandal in Khammam district in the early hours of Friday.
The victim, Banothu Meenakshi, was later found hanging from the ceiling in her house under suspicious circumstances. According to police, Meenakshi’s husband, Shivaji, claimed that she died by suicide after hanging herself in a room of their house.
However, her relatives alleged that Shivaji had assaulted her and later tried to portray the death as a suicide. Meanwhile, a video showing Shivaji allegedly physically assaulting Meenakshi surfaced on social media and went viral.
Shivaji reportedly claimed that the video was old and unrelated to his wife’s death.
Meenakshi and Shivaji had been married for nearly 14 years and were living in Golthanda village with their two sons, aged 13 and 9 years. The victim’s parents alleged that Shivaji had taken a housing loan of `70 lakh for construction of a house and that Meenakshi had an insurance coverage of `1 crore.
They suspected that he planned the murder to clear the loan using the insurance amount. Tirumalayapalem Sub-Inspector K. Jagdish said a case was registered based on the complaint lodged by Meenakshi’s parents and investigation is underway.
