The Legal Metrology Department conducted raids on gold and jewellery showrooms in Greater Hyderabad to safeguard consumer interests. As Diwali is near people purchase jewellery. 

The department is taking all measures to protect consumers from getting cheated by jewellery shops, said officials, adding that they have booked 85 cases in total and seized jewellery worth over Rs 1 crore. 

The Legal Metrology Department formed nine teams with 30 members each, headed by three deputy controllers, five assistant controllers and conducted raids at major gold and jewellery showrooms in Hyderabad on Thursday and Friday. 

“The raids were conducted at Bajrang Lal and Sons, Surajbhan and Sons, Narayana Jewellers, Totatam Sagarlal Jewellers, Sri Balaji Jewellers of Abids, Mussaddilal Jewellers, P. Satyanarayana and Sons in Basheerbagh, Mangatrai Jewellers in Punjagutta, Basheerbagh, Manepally Jewellers, Tanishq Jewellers, Vaibhav Jewellers in Dilsukhnagar, Sri Ganesh



Jewellers in LB Nagar, Chandana Jewellers, CMR in Kukatpally, Punjagutta’s Lalita Jewellers, PCJ Jewellers, Keertilal Jewellers, Nacharam’s Sri Bhavani Jewellers, Mahalakshmi Jewellers in Jubilee Check Post and other major jeweller showrooms,” officials said. 

According to the Legal Metrology Department norms, jewellery shops should mention the purity of gold (22 carat or 24 carat), exact weight, price on that particular day, if any stones are used in the jewellery and making charges. Any wastage should also be shown separately along with the price.

“Also price should be calculated exactly on the net weight. But in some cases near about 25 percent is charged more in the name of wastage. Charging more price than actual cost of the ornament. Legal Metrology Department officials booked cases against the offenders. Test Weight should be kept available at all the showrooms for the convenience of the customers” concluded the officials.
