BRS working president KT Rama Rao has hit out at the Election Commission of India (ECI) for acting like an extended arm of the NDA government, rather than safeguarding the democratic process of elections. He emphasised the urgent need for a revision of the ECI itself.
Reacting to the Chief Election Commissioner’s press conference on Sunday, Rama Rao felt that the ECI left more questions than answers and the Chief Election Commissioner’s explanations sounded more like excuses rather than solutions.
“Yes, we need an SIR (Special Intensive Revision).
Not of electoral rolls, but of the ECI itself,” he quipped, adding that it is now clear that the ECI which was tasked with protecting democracy was failing in its duty.
The BRS working president argued that as the ECI itself admitted discrepancies in voter lists, it was effectively acknowledging its own dereliction of duty. He called for a complete overhaul of the system.
“It is high time we demand not just a revision of the voter list but a clinical revision of the ECI itself, so that we can still continue to call ourselves a democracy,” he asserted.
