As a permanent solution to ensure the problem of flooding does not recur during heavy rains in the city, the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) has been initiated, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, KT Rama Rao said.

Laying the foundation stone for SNDP works on Hussain Sagar suplus nala from Kavadiguda to river Musi with an estimated cost of Rs 68.40 crore here on Thursday, the Minister recalled the inundations that resulted from Hussain Sagar surplus nala had caused problems for residents of Nallakunta, Amberpet, Ashoknagar and Musheerabad.

The residents had then appealed that a 12-km long retaining wall from Hussain Sagar to Musi on either side would provide a permanent solution from such inundations. Earlier governments have built a retaining wall for just 3 km. A request was also made for a strategic outcome to be planned to solve the issue of flooding on the lines of SRDP that has been taken up to improve the road networks in the city.

“Following this, I along with Ministers Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Mohd Mahmood Ali met Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar

Rao and requested for a permanent solution to the flooding on the lines of SRDP,” he said. No development of nala network was taken up in the city in the last 70 years.

In the first phase, measures are being taken with a budget of Rs 858 crore to address the issues in areas which witness high levels of flooding, Rama Rao said.

Apart from GHMC limits, nala development is also being taken up in surrounding urban areas. While 30 works with an estimated cost of Rs 633 crore are being taken up in the GHMC limits, another 22 works with Rs 225.12 crore will be taken up in municipalities within ORR limits, the Minister said.

Hussain sagar surplus nala works from Viceroy Hotel to Kavadiguda, Gandhinagar, Ashoknagar, Chikkadpally, Bagh Lingampally, Golnaka and till river Musi, will be completed in two packages. Though the construction of retaining wall on the surplus nala demanded 400 properties, the same was restricted to 20 properties after noticing the problems faced by people here. Minster Srinivas Yadav and others articipated in the programme.
