Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao launched a special drive on sanitation here on Tuesday.

To prevent the spread of seasonal diseases, the Minister initiated a cleanliness drive from his residence here at Pragathi Bhavan. He inspected the premises around his residence and took up a cleanliness drive. He drained stagnated water out of the containers and sprayed oil at the base of the water fountains and flower pots to avoid mosquito spread.

The Minister said awareness should be created amongst people on seasonal diseases. GHMC and the Health Department were implementing mass awareness drives on a war footing to educate people on seasonal diseases and help them take precautionary measures, he said.

“Domestic sanitation is very important in eradicating seasonal diseases. GHMC is taking care up extensive fogging and anti-larval operations in public spaces but citizens should also ensure cleanliness and clear all water stagnation points that can turn into mosquito breeding grounds,” he

said.

Community participation is key in containing the spread of viral fevers and called for their support in controlling the outbreak. The Minister asked the people to take precautions by cleaning water tanks, sumps, water drums, coolers, and other water storage sources in their homes. He also appealed to public representatives, officials and citizens to take part in the massive drive to prevent the spread of seasonal and vector borne diseases.

Rao also tweeted later, saying “to prevent viral fevers and menace that dengue has become, request you to inspect your homes for stagnant water points like flower pots, air coolers and water bodies, all breeding grounds for mosquitoes.” (sic) and also tweeted an appeal: “I have done that at my home. Please do the same and post your pics,”

Later, Rao directed Mayor Bonthu Rammohan and GHMC officials to intensify awareness programmes. He wanted them to take up mass campaigns in educational institutions, slums, residential colonies and apartments.
