Hyderabad: The three-member committee of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB), which met here on Friday, allotted 1.5 tmc for the drinking water needs of Hyderabad city, Khammam and Nalgonda districts in Telangana, against an indent of 10 tmc placed by the State Engineer-in-Chief.

In the same release order issued by the board, Andhra Pradesh was allotted 6.50 tmc of water (2.50 tmc for the Nagarjunasagar Right Canal and 4 tmc for the Krishna Delta system). Telangana will get 540 cusecs up to May 31, while the NS Right Canal and Krishna delta would be supplied 5,000 cusecs each.

The board has considered the drinking water needs of the two States as paramount importance and wanted the available storage that was estimated to be 8.044 tmc in both Srisailam and Nagarjunsagar project at levels of 775 ft and 502 ft, respectively, as on Friday. The allotments were made after assessing the drinking water needs of the two States up to May 31, which marks the end of Water Year 2016-17.

Immediate effect
The release order would be implemented with immediate effect. The three-member committee would meet again after May 31 to take into consideration further requirement of water of both the States by examining the scope for drawing water from Srisailam Reservoir below

775 feet and Nagarjunasagar below 502 feet.

The AP engineer-in-chief has strongly opposed the plea for allocation of water to Telangana on the ground that it had drawn 8.33 tmc in excess of its allotted 31 tmc, while AP had a balance of 7.845 tmc yet to be utilized from its allotted quota of 47 tmc. But the KRMB member secretary, Samir Chatterjee, indicated that the need for fulfillment of drinking water needs of any State cannot be ignored.

He also mentioned that the excess utilization made either by Telangana or Andhra Pradesh under Srisailam reservoir or the Nagarjunasagar project during the current water year shall not be treated as carryover to the ensuing water year.

He said further that KRMB being an autonomous body will be constrained to report to the Ministry of Water resources against the project authorities of Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar in case of receiving grievances from the State in respect of non-implementation of KRMB water release order.

The Telangana irrigation authorities who were already upset with the move to install 14 of the 18 telemetry system only in Telangana, strongly opposed the moves to shift the locations of the Telemetry systems proposed at Pothireddypadu and the NSP left canal (on TS-AP border).
