Surgeons at Hyderabad-based Kamineni Hospitals have rebuilt the jaw bone, which had to be resected due to cancer, in a 39-year-old daily wage labourer, using his leg bone.
The patient, addicted to gutkha chewing and smoking, suffered a non-healing ulcer in the right lower jaw and could barely open his mouth more than 1.5 finger breaths. Biopsy revealed cancer of the right inner cheek that had already aggressively invaded the jawbone, a press release said.
Dr D V
Vineeth, Surgical Oncologist, led a team of surgeons for a complex composite resection and Modified Radical Neck Dissection to remove the cancer-affected portion.
Dr B Krishna Chaitanya, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, performed a microvascular procedure by harvesting bone and tissue from the patient’s leg and recreating the mandibular contour.
The surgeons were able to restore the structural integrity of his face in a single, high-stakes operation, a press release said.
