Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister K T Rama Rao on Wednesday said that 85,000 double bedroom houses would be handed over to the beneficiaries in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits by December this year.

No other metro city in the country was constructing so many housing units as was being done in Hyderabad, he pointed out, adding that out of the 85,000 houses, 75,000 were being constructed under the dignity housing programme while the rest were under the JNNURM scheme.

Under the dignity housing programme, the State government had allocated Rs 9,700 crore for construction of one lakh 2BHK houses, Rao said. Of the target of one lakh housing units, 4,000 each were being constructed in the 24 Assembly constituencies of Hyderabad. Rao, who reviewed the status of the dignity housing programme in Hyderabad,



instructed the officials to finalise the list of beneficiaries at the earliest. Officials informed the Minister that construction works at most sites were in the final stages of completion.

Instructions were also issued to the officials to have in place the required infrastructure including water supply, electricity and other amenities and also to make arrangements for handing over the houses to beneficiaries with all amenities. The guidelines for identifying the beneficiaries would be discussed with the Housing Department and be finalised in a couple of days, the Minister said.

Mayor Bonthu Rammohan, Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin, MA&UD Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar, GHMC Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar, EVDM Director Viswajit Kampati and District Collectors concerned participated in the meeting.
