Hyderabad Traffic Police to launch special drive against drivers without licence

After years of routine enforcement that clubbed multiple traffic offences together, the Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP) is now shifting gears with a sharper strategy and planning to launch a continuous special enforcement drive targeting motorists driving without a valid Driving Licence (DL) from March 1.

Senior traffic officials said that while licence violations are checked during routine enforcement drives, the impact has often been limited. Routine checks usually cover multiple traffic offences at once, which reduces focused attention on specific violations such as driving without a valid DL or failing to carry one.

“During regular drives, we deal with several violations simultaneously. But when we conduct a special drive dedicated to a single offence like driving without a licence, the impact will be much more visible and compliance improves significantly,” said Mohan Kumar, ACP, Traffic-III.

The upcoming enforcement will specifically target motorists who either do not possess a valid licence or fail to carry it while driving. Special teams will be deployed at major junctions, accident-prone



stretches and busy corridors to identify violators and initiate legal action.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D Joel Davis said a considerable number of road accidents involve drivers who are not properly licensed, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement. “Motorists who are yet to obtain a driving licence are advised to approach the Road Transport Authority (RTA) immediately and apply for one,” he added.

Officials also said that the drive will place special emphasis on curbing minor driving. “We are particularly concerned about minors operating vehicles. Parents and guardians who allow underage children to drive will be held responsible. Road safety begins at home, and families must ensure that vehicles are not handed over to those who are legally ineligible to drive,” another senior officer added.

Vehicle owners were warned that permitting an unlicensed person to drive is a punishable offence. Police further pointed out that in the event of an accident involving a driver without a valid licence, insurance claims may be denied, leading to serious financial and legal consequences.
