Hot and humid weather, unusual for October, continued to torment denizens in Hyderabad even as the weather department recorded further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon on Thursday.

The mercury stayed high at 35 degrees Celsius across Hyderabad on Thursday afternoon, while day temperatures in several districts of Telangana inched towards the 37-degree Celsius mark.

The highest temperature in Telangana on Wednesday was recorded at Khammam at 37 degrees Celsius, with several districts logging temperatures between 36.5 degrees Celsius and 36.9 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the highest day temperature recorded in Hyderabad in the last 24 hours, according to data collated by the Telangana Development Planning Society, was 35.3 degrees Celsius at

Santoshnagar and Chintal, followed by 35.2 degrees Celsius at Malkajgiri and Saroornagar.

Amid the sweltering heat, the city’s streets were largely bereft of traffic for most of the afternoon, with denizens apparently preferring to stay indoors. There was little traffic around noon in several corridors that usually witness heavy vehicular movement, with traffic snarls being a common sight.

In a weather update issued on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad noted that the southwest monsoon had further withdrawn from the remaining parts of Maharashtra, some parts of Goa, Karnataka, Telangana and Odisha, apart from Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. The line of withdrawal over Telangana passes through Tandur, Vikarabad, Hyderabad, Jangaon and Bhupalpally.
