Water tanker bookings in Hyderabad more than doubled in October, rising to around 2.2 lakh from 87,000 during the same month last year, indicating increasing pressure on the city’s water resources ahead of the summer months.
With concerns over depletion and declining surface water availability, civic authorities have urged real estate developers and residential communities to use treated wastewater for construction, landscaping and other non-drinking purposes instead of relying on
freshwater.
The issue was discussed at a workshop on El Niño contingency organised by the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) Telangana and CREDAI Hyderabad on Thursday. Senior officials from civic bodies, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) and representatives of the real estate sector discussed preparations for potential water stress during the coming summer.
