The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will launch its ‘Dial-a-Green Tanker’ service on November 1 to promote the use of treated sewage water for construction, industries and landscaping, and protect the city’s drinking water supplies amid concerns over El Niño’s impact.

HMWSSB Managing Director K Ashok Reddy said reduced rainfall, declining groundwater availability and pressure on reserves in the Singur and Manjira reservoirs had raised concerns over water shortages next summer.

HMWSSB initially aims to increase the daily use of treated water to 500 MLD for construction, industries, parks, green belts and other non-potable

purposes.

The water board convened a meeting with representatives of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI), Telangana Builders’ Forum (TBF), National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) and other construction-sector stakeholders to conserve potable water during the eight months before the next monsoon.

A Green Water Tanker digital platform is being developed to register suppliers, tanker operators, construction firms, industries and other users. It will match demand with treated water available at nearby sewage treatment plants, taking into account delivery distances and tanker availability, besides enabling online bookings and tracking.
