Hyderabad on Tuesday was drenched by heavy showers, bringing down night temperatures significantly. The downpour brought life to a grinding halt, triggering severe traffic gridlock during the peak evening rush hour.

Commuters along major arterial roads and key junctions, especially in the IT corridor, Khairatabad and parts of Secunderabad such as Musheerabad and Marredpally, faced long delays in reaching home. Rapid inundation of low-lying areas under sheets of rainwater also caused open drains to overflow at several locations.

While the substantial downpour brought much-needed relief, IMD Hyderabad maintained that

Tuesday’s rain consisted of pre-monsoon showers and that the southwest monsoon is still a few days away from making a formal entry into the State capital.

Officials said that while the southwest monsoon crossed into the southern border districts of Telangana on June 8, it has not yet advanced into Hyderabad.

Atmospheric conditions remain highly favourable for the steady northward advance of the monsoon across Telangana over the next few days, IMD Hyderabad officials said.

“The ongoing heavy spells of rain are intense pre-monsoon thundershowers driven by local weather conditions,” an IMD official said.
