Sports enthusiasts in the city, especially those living in and around Gajularamaram, have something to cheer about.

The construction of a sports park in the TSIIC area, Gajularamaram ward, by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) at an estimated cost of Rs 198.50 lakh has been completed and the facility is expected to be inaugurated this month. Basketball, cricket, badminton, football, skating and cycling are the activities for which facilities have been made here. The cricket court is also equipped with artificial turfing.

Maintenance of the park has been handed over to an agency and the prices to utilise the facility will be nominal, said a civic body official.

"The prices are nominal, irrespective of the sport, the monthly fee will be less than Rs 500. If the person wants to hire a coach, the agency will charge the individual around Rs 1,000 per month," said a GHMC official.

The sports facility spread over 1.8 acres was once an eyesore. Over the

years, the land parcel turned into a dump yard with debris scattered all over the place, which has now finally been developed into a park.

Meanwhile, to further deck up the park, theme-based construction and wall paintings were taken up by the GHMC. The entrance of the park was also built with a sports theme. The walls of the park entrance are built in the shape of a cricket bat standing on a dice. The slab over the walls has replicas of basketballs with a gate underneath it.

The theme-based wall paintings have added more attraction to the sports facility. As a token of appreciation to the champions who have made the country proud in the recently held Tokyo Olympics, a girl playing badminton and a youngster throwing javelin were painted on the walls.

A person holding a cricket bat in his hands was also painted beautifying the facility. A school and a club are located near the sports park and GHMC officials said that several people kept enquiring about the inauguration date when the construction was underway.
