Workers of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) demolished 16 timber depots in Goshamahal circle in the Old City. The lease period of the shops expired two years ago, GHMC officials said.

The demolitions were carried on the stretch connecting Goshamahal Police Ground and Hindi Nagar Bus Stop. “The demolition was carried out following court orders. The court had directed the tenants to vacate the place two years ago, but they did not vacate. This forced us to demolish the shops,“ said Surya

Kumar, a GHMC official from the estate wing of the civic body .The shops were also obstructing the road-widening, said officials.

More than 15 policemen were deployed to look after the law and order during this drive. The demolition drive carried on for hours and more than 50 officials from the GHMC were present. “We informed the vendors, a week ago to vacate the premises and remove all the material, but they did follow our instructions,“ said Surya Kumar a GHMC official.
