The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) razed as many as 55 buildings in the city, on Monday. The move comes days after the municipal administration and urban development (MAUD) minister, KT Rama Rao, during a review meet held on June 12 with officials on monsoon preparedness, issued instructions to initiate action against old and dilapidated structures through a special drive.
“The special drive for demolition of dilapidated structures will continue till the remaining 734 structures are demolished or repaired by the occupants,” read a statement issued by B Janardhan Reddy, commissioner of
GHMC.
As per the survey conducted in March this year, there are total 1,194 such buildings within the GHMC limits of which 413 have been demolished and 175 buildings have been repaired during the year 2018.
In addition to this, civic officials, as part of their monsoon preparedness plan, are also taking up other activities such as obtaining opinion on the structural safety of identified dilapidated buildings from the engineering department and carrying out immediate demolition of the most dangerous structures within its limits.
