The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has proposed to demolish and reconstruct 23 markets that are currently in a dilapidated condition.“We have proposed to construct a model market by demolishing the fish market near Kanaka Durga Devi Alayam in Ameerpet,“ said a GHMC official.

Most of the markets that will be reconstructed are very old and if unattended before the rains begin, it can put many lives at risk, officials said. The demolitions are expected to start from the last week of May . The civic body will then construct model markets at the same place so as to accommodate more vendors and also provide them with better amenities.

In the GHMC south zone, Azad Market, Begum Bazar Market, Mangalhat Market, Maisaram Market,

Mahboob Chowk Market, Moazzam Jahi Market, Kanda Swamy Market and Fareed Market have been earmarked for demolition.

Ameerpet Fish Market, Panjagutta Market, Chikkadpally Market, Koti Subway and Lingampally Market in the central zone have also been proposed for demolition. The model markets are a part of the 100 day action plan, a project envisioned by KT Rama Rao, minister for municipal administration and urban development. Under this, the government aims to construct new markets, build better roads and protect land parcels.

But in the Old City, the GHMC's south zone unit which covers Old City and large parts of Rajendra Nagar is finding it difficult to identify suitable land parcels to construct some of the model markets.
