In view of the increased traffic in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been initiating several public transport safety measures aimed at streamlining the traffic and checking accidents. The civic body is also setting up new traffic signals at various junctions to regulate the traffic congestion in the city.

Under these measures, the GHMC is installing 253 new traffic signals out of which 155 signals will be using Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) systems and 98 signals will be using pelican systems, which will aid pedestrians in crossings the busy road stretches. Once they are

installed, the civic body will connect them to the Command Control Centre where they record daily traffic details.

The private firms installing these systems will have the responsibility of managing them for a period of three years, the GHMC said in a press release issued here.

Police authorities will identify the locations for installation of the traffic signal poles and inform the GHMC accordingly for taking further necessary actions. The GHMC is aiming to launch these new signals by the end of December to minimize the traffic hassles.
