Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is extensively using drones for spraying anti-larval chemicals to curb mosquito menace in different areas.

In each lake, spraying of anti-larval chemicals is being done once in a week. Currently, five drones are being used for spraying the chemicals and conducting anti-larval operations in Khairatabad, Secunderabad, Serilingampally, Kukatpally and LB Nagar zones.

In addition to these, 11 drones will be used for replicating the exercises in other areas shortly, said GHMC chief Entomologist Dr Rambabu.

Regarding, water hyacinth clearance

he said the growth of water hyacinth in the water bodies was due to the release of sewage from nearby colonies into the lakes. This is resulting in a spurt in the growth of Culex mosquitoes, however, there is no reason to worry for the growing population of these mosquitoes, he explained.

Tenders are being floated to take up works for clearing water hyacinth in several lakes. Like all other lakes, drones are being used for spraying anti-larval chemicals in River Musi. In four zones, 54 officials have been deployed to take up anti-larval operations, he said in a press release.
