Final electoral rolls tomorrow

Mon 15 Jul 2019, 12:05:04
The Telangana State Election Commission revised the schedule for final publication of ward-wise electoral rolls for the upcoming municipal elections. Accordingly, the final publication of voters list and also reservations to the posts of municipal chairpersons and ward members will be announced on July 16.

Earlier, the TSEC had scheduled the release of final electoral rolls and reservation of posts on Sunday.

Of total 142 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) including six municipal corporations, elections will be held for 132 ULBs including three municipal corporations of Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Ramagundam.

The State government already released the ward-wise list after taking up delimitation in the ULBs and also a draft electoral rolls. Though TSEC prepared the ward-wise final electoral rolls on Sunday, it was not made public after the officials observed some discrepancies in preparation of ward-wise electoral rolls.

Some of the District Collectors and the District Election authorities requested the Commission to extend the date for final publication of electoral rolls accurately by plugging the discrepancies and the Commission agreed, extending the date from Sunday to July 16. The TSEC made arrangements to conduct the polls by this month end.

However, the State government requested the Commission to hold the polls only after the new Municipal Act was enacted in the Assembly during the special session scheduled to be held on July 18 and 19. Accordingly, the Election Commission is likely to release the electoral scheduled after about a week and conduct the polls during August.

The final electoral rolls is being prepared based on the existing list used during the Assembly elections and any newly registered voters will be accommodated in the supplementary list. About 60 lakh voters are estimated to be residing in 129 municipalities and three municipal corporations. The officials have commenced identification of the polling stations in the respective ULBs. They are also preparing the ward-wise electoral rolls along with reservations on the population basis.

The officials have been instructed to make all arrangements for smooth conduct of municipal polls.
