In a significant move, the Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) has increased compensation for deaths caused by electric shock from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh.

The revised compensation will come into effect from April 1 and will be applicable even in cases where the accident occurred due to consumer negligence.

The ERC has also directed power distribution

companies (DISCOMs) to ensure that compensation is paid within two months of the incident. In case of delays, DISCOMs must provide valid reasons for the lapse, as stated in the tariff orders issued on Wednesday.

The Commission further announced that there will be no change in electricity tariffs for the financial year 2026–27. Alongside, it issued several guidelines aimed at improving consumer services.
