The Hyderabad zonal unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized gold worth Rs.2.37 crore from a passenger at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad on Thursday.
Acting on specific intelligence the officers of DRI intercepted a passenger who had travelled from Kuwait to RGIA via Sharjah, by Air Arabia flight G9 467.
A thorough examination of the passenger’s checked-in baggage resulted in recovery of five 24kt gold bars and two 24kt gold bar
cut pieces totaling 1798 gram valued at Rs. 2.37 crore.
The five gold bars were indigenously concealed in door metallic lock and two gold bar cut pieces were concealed in plastic pouch containing sunflower seeds, according to a statement by DRI.
The recovered smuggled gold of foreign origin, along with the packing material, has been seized and the said passenger has been arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act-1962. Further investigation is in progress.
