Hyderabad: The Cyberabad traffic police have intensified the drunken driving checks and caught 2,351 persons in December. The tests are being conducted while following all safety precautions in view of the prevailing Covid-19 situation, the police said.

The traffic police have started to organise checks during night and evening hours at various junctions and accident-prone areas in Madhapur, Balanagar and Shamshabad zones.

During the drive, the police found several persons between the age group of 21 to 30 years driving vehicles after consuming liquor despite massive awareness being taken against such practise. “Cases are registered against persons who are caught during the checking and vehicles are seized. In case of accidents, all those in the vehicle are booked in the case,” said S M Vijay Kumar, DCP (Traffic) Cyberabad.

The highest number of persons to be caught was those who were driving two-wheelers with a total of 1,763 cases booked for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The traffic police said the driving licenses of those persons who were caught during the checking were seized and sent to the regional transport officers for suspension for three months for the first time offenders and permanently for those who were caught subsequently.

The police said the employers, educational institutions, government departments were being intimated about the involvement of their employees/wards getting involved in such dangerous acts.

Any person committing any road traffic accident by driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and causing the death of any person (whether travelling in their vehicle or any third party vehicle), will be booked



for ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ u/s 304 part II of IPC which would result in imprisonment of either description (simple or rigorous) of up to 10 years.

The police appealed to the general public not to resort to driving any vehicle under the influence of alcohol. They should make alternative arrangements for their travel after they consume alcohol in any event.
Rachakonda Traffic Police asked the people not to drive vehicles under influence of alcohol and said special drunk driving checks were being conducted to prevent dangerous, rash and negligent driving.

Mohd Tajuddin Ahmed, DCP (Traffic) Rachakonda said in view of the New Year celebration on December 31, people were advised not to drive vehicles after consuming alcohol as it could endanger their lives and other road users. “We will be organising checking at all important thoroughfares and accident-prone areas on New Year. If anyone is caught, the case will be booked and the vehicle detained,” he warned.

The traffic police booked 3,287 drunk driving cases in the year 2020 and 33 licenses of those convicted for the offences were suspended during the year.

Mohd Tajuddin Ahmed, in-charge DCP (traffic) Rachakonda said the checks were conducted throughout the week at different places in Rachakonda and all precautionary measures were taken up in view of the Covid pandemic.

“During the month of December, 260 cases were booked by the traffic police. The vehicles and the driving license of the motorists found driving under influence of alcohol are seized and forwarded to the transport department for further action,” said the official.
