A city court on Saturday directed the police to register a criminal case against Minister for Environment and Forests, Konda Surekha, for allegedly making defamatory statements against BRS Working President and former Minister KT Rama Rao.

Last year, Konda Surekha had allegedly made defamatory remarks against Rama Rao in connection with the phone tapping case and a film actress.

Rama Rao approached the court and filed a defamation complaint, seeking the registration of an FIR against the Minister.

The court,

after reviewing the preliminary material submitted before it, concluded that there was sufficient prima facie evidence to initiate proceedings under Sections 356, 222 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

It ordered that a criminal case be registered and a formal notice served to the accused on or before August 21, 2025.

The court, while ruling in favour of the complainant, rejected the preliminary objections raised by the defence team, which had questioned the court’s jurisdiction and termed the complaint speculative.
