A couple was unanimously elected as chairperson and vice-chairperson of Nirmal Municipality for the first time in the history of the civic body, which was reserved for general women. A special meeting was held to elect the two posts here on Monday.
Forty-year-old Appala Kavya was chosen as the head of the civic body, while her husband
Ganesh Chakravarthy was elected her deputy.
While Kavya won from ward number 36 by a margin of 600 votes against her opponent M Srilatha of the BJP, Ganesh registered victory from the 37th ward of the 42-member Nirmal municipality. They became the first couple to be the chairperson and the vice-chairperson of the civic body respectively.
