Suzy, a chimpanzee at the Nehru Zoological Park, attacked a gardener and tried to escape from her enclosure just past noon on Monday.

With the Dasara holidays having started, the zoo had a large crowd. The chimpanzee was seen running around the enclosure but could not jump cross the barricaded lawn.

This is the second time Suzy has attacked someone and tried to escape.  Officials said she suffers from bouts of loneliness and anger.

Suzy once belonged to the Sahara group chairman Subrata Roy and is given preferential treatment in the jail. She has her own toothbrush and

toothpaste, gets a bath and a massage. She is partial to mineral water and has coffee, besides bread and jam for breakfast.

On Monday afternoon, Mr A. Yadaiah, the gardener at the zoo, was taking up regular maintenance when Suzy charged at him and injured him on the head.

Mr Yadaiah extricated himself, rushed out and bolted the door. “The zoo veterinary team rushed to the spot, tranquilised the chimp and shifted it back to its enclosure,” said an official from the zoo. Mr Yadaiah is said to be stable and under observation of the doctors.
