The Hyderabad unit Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) officials conducted a search and seizure operation at a jewellery shop in Abids on Monday for violation of the provisions of the BIS Act-2016 and the mandatory hallmarking requirements notified by the Central government.

The enforcement action was carried out under the directions of P. V. Srikanth, Director and Head, BIS Hyderabad Branch Office, and was led by Sattu Savitha, Director and Scientist-E.

During the inspection, BIS officials found gold jewellery articles being offered for sale without mandatory BIS hallmark and also detected jewellery articles bearing old hallmark markings. Such practices are in violation of the

provisions governing the sale of hallmarked gold jewellery under the BIS Act, 2016.

The seized stock included rings, necklaces and pendants. A total of approximately 1.6 kg of gold jewellery was seized during the operation. The BIS has initiated further action under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016 against the establishment concerned.

Speaking on the occasion, Srikanth, stated: "Consumer protection remains a key priority for BIS. Consumers should purchase only BIS hallmarked gold jewellery carrying the BIS Logo, Purity Mark and HUID number.

Before making a purchase, consumers are advised to verify the authenticity of hallmarked jewellery through the BIS CARE App.”
