Buoyed by the success of Basthi Dawakhanas in areas under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the State government on Tuesday has decided to expand the concept and establish a total of 288 similar healthcare facilities in 141 municipalities across Telangana.

The 288 Basthi Dawakhanas across other urban centres in Telangana will be established in two-phases and will be ready by June 2, Health Minister, T Harish Rao said on Tuesday.

“The Basthi Dawakhanas that were established in GHMC limits have achieved a lot of success in providing free quality healthcare to the urban poor. Chief Minister, K Chandrashekhar Rao, recently said that due to such facilities, a lot of urban poor have been able to save money by avoiding out-of-pocket expenditure. As a result of these advantages, he has directed us to establish 288 more such facilities in six months,” the Minister said at a review

meeting.

At present, there are 256 Basthi Dawakhanas in areas under GHMC and an additional 288 new facilities will take the total to 544 Basthi Dawakhanas in Telangana. The urban poor will have free access to over 60 different diagnostic tests at the Basthi Dawakhanas through the T-Diagnostic initiative of the State government.

As part of T-Diagnostics initiative, the samples from patients will be collected at respective Basthi Dawakhanas and will be sent for processing to the nearest centralised diagnostic hub. By evening of the same day, the diagnostic test results will be available to the patients, cutting down the number of times they have to visit the healthcare facility.

“All these healthcare facilities will be available for urban poor free of cost and in a quality setting. We are targeting June 2 to start 288 Basthi Dawakhanas,” Harish Rao in the review meeting, which was attended by senior health officials, said.
