Summer is here and there are apprehensions among citizens over the supply of drinking water in the city. Clearing fears, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director M Dana Kishore tells S Sandeep Kumar of ‘Telangana Today‘ that the board is all geared up and there is nothing to worry.
The situation is much better this time. In fact, last summer, Manjeera, Singur, Yellampally, Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar had gone dry. This time, sufficient water is available and there will be no supply related issues.
This summer, 372 MGD will be supplied. There is a buffer of 80 MGD available to meet any excess demand. Apart from 372 MGD for the city, 48 MGD will be supplied to remote areas of Medchal, Ranga Reddy and Vikarabad.
Three tmc-ft of water is available in Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, but that will not be used. On the contrary, 20 submersible pumps will be installed at Nagarjunasagar at a cost of Rs 7 crore to draw water, if required. Last May, the Board

had drawn 270 MGD from Nagarjunasagar. This source will be utilised only in case of high demand from the core city.
A: HUDCO-aided works to ensure pipeline network to fringe areas, is in full swing. Already works pertaining to 900 km of pipeline network has been completed and the remaining 1,000 km will be completed by June. This apart, 39 reservoirs in different areas on the outskirts will be operational this summer. By March, 12 reservoirs would be ready, in April another 12, and by May 15 more will be ready. Once these reservoirs become operational, most of the problem on the outskirts will be addressed. The Water Board is also extending technical assistance to gram panchayats in Medchal and Ranga Reddy districts to improve their supply mechanism.
At present, daily water supply is made available for 75,000 connections in different slums. Trial runs are being continued and very shortly, the supply will be increased to 1.6 lakh connections in the slums, since they are prone to drinking water problems.
