Hyderabad: Five maternal deaths in a span of a week seem to have spurred health authorities to take up measures to improve infrastructure facilities at State-run Niloufer Hospital.

On Monday, Health Minister, C Laxma Reddy directed health authorities to take immediate measures to fully operationalise the Rs 60 crore Rajiv intensive care block at Niloufer Hospital.

While the new building was inaugurated recently, recruitment of

doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, and grade IV employees needed to provide medical services to 500 hospital beds was yet to be taken up.

The process to procure medical equipment worth Rs 15 crore by Telangana Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TMSIDC) is also pending. It is estimated that to manage close to 500 beds, a minimum of 100 doctors, 200 nurses, and over 400 paramedical staff are needed for the new building.
