Vedaant Madhavan takes next step as Asian Games swimming debut beckons

Vedaant Madhavan will be part of India's men's 4x200m freestyle relay team at the Asian Games on Monday, with the quartet first taking part in the qualification round before a potential final later in the day.

Vedaant has been making his way through the Indian swimming system for several years. He first attracted significant attention in 2022 when he broke the national record in the men's 1500m freestyle at the 48th Junior National Aquatic Championships. His performances at the youth level helped establish him as one of India's promising swimmers, and he has since continued to compete in domestic and international events.

The 19-year-old is yet to win a major event at the senior level, but has made steady progress as he has moved into senior



competition. According to World Aquatics, Vedaant won bronze in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay at the Senior National Aquatics Championships in June this year, clocking 7:46.52.

At the Asian Games, he will be part of a four-member Indian relay team that also includes Sajan Prakash, Aneesh Sunil Kumar Gowda and Dhakshan Shashikumar. The team will first need to negotiate the qualification round, with the final scheduled later in the day for those who make the cut.

For Vedaant, the Asian Games will also be another opportunity to establish himself on a bigger senior stage. His swimming career has often received attention because of his father, actor R Madhavan, but Vedaant has previously spoken about his desire to be recognised for his own achievements.
