Legendary Sunil Chhetri seems to have signed a contract extension with Bengaluru FC. The 41-year-old superstar, who is in the last leg of his career, collaborated with the club on a video that teased his extension.
While no details have been given about his extension officially, in the video, Chhetri can be seen asking the club to announce the new deal. At the end of the 2-minute-long video, a caption emerges: 'Chhetri. Bengaluru. Simply meant to be.'
The former India captain is one of the long-serving members of the team. Chhetri first joined the club back in 2013 and had a spell of two years. He then briefly left for Mumbai City FC before joining back the side in 2016 on a loan spell. The forward made his move permanent in 2017 and has been at the club ever since.
Chhetri is the
highest goalscorer in the history of the Indian Super League, which is currently suspended due to a stand-off between the All India Football Federation and Football Sports Development Limited, who are run by Reliance.
Chhetri has scored 65 goals in the history of the competition and at the moment is four goals clear of Bartholomew Ogbeche.
Bengaluru last played in April when they were knocked out in the first round of the Kalinga Super Cup by Inter Kashi. The team will next feature in the Goa Super Cup on Wednesday, October 29.
Earlier this year, amidst the standoff between AIFF and FSDL, Bengaluru FC had stopped the salaries of its players and support staff, including that of Sunil Chhetri. The team had announced on August 4 after the AIFF failed to announce next season's ISL on time.
