Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 44th Chess Olympiad at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on July 28 after the prestigious event, which was originally scheduled to take place in Russia, was moved to Mahabalipuram on the outskirts of Chennai due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Tamil Nadu government is all out to promote the much-anticipated event which will have over 2000 participants from 200 countries.

The 44th Chess Olympiad preparations have given Chennai a facelift at many prominent places with the Chess theme coming into play. The mascot of the event is a horse clad in a white shirt and a



white veshti. The image of the mascot has been used widely across the city to greet people with lines, "Namma Chennai, Namma Chess."

The security has been beefed up and a five-tier security system has been put in place for the Prime Minister's visit. As many as 22,000 police personnel have been deployed for security purposes in the city. On July 28 and 29, flying of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles have been banned in the city limits.

The Prime Minister will be inaugurating the Chess Olympiad on July 28 and will be participating in the convocation ceremony of Anna University college of engineering, Guindy, on July 29.
