India’s PV Sindhu, on Thursday, August 4, qualified for the Round of 16 in the badminton women’s singles of the Commonwealth Games 2022. The two-time Olympic medallist defeated Maldives’ Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq 21-4, 21-11 in the Round of 32 match at the NEC Badminton Show Court in Birmingham.

Sindhu, one of India’s most successful badminton players, started the match on a dominating note, not letting her opponent much breathing space. The first game was a completely one-sided affair as Sindhu won without having to break much sweat.

However, the badminton player from Maldives made a stupendous comeback in the second game, making it 9-9. But Sindhu wasn’t going to die wondering after being put under pressure. She

brought forth her A-game and didn’t allow her opponent to dominate further.

Sindhu, who won back-to-back medals in the Olympics, served with precision as she garnered 33 out of 42 points through them. On the contrary, her opponent from Maldives could only eke out six points from her serve.

In the second set, Fathimath managed to get a slender lead of one point before going down to the experience and guile of Sindhu. In the first game, Sindhu won nine straight points to get the Maldivian by the scruff of her neck. In the second, the veteran won 11 points in a row.

As the tournament progresses, things are likely to get tougher for Sindhu. It remains to be seen if she can keep her calm and win a medal for India.
