London: In Wimbledon Tennis, top seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia started his defence of the men's title by beating Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 in straight sets.  Djokovic is aiming for a fifth Wimbledon title and a 16th Grand Slam. The world number one will play American Denis Kudla, who beat Tunisian Malek Jaziri, in the second round.

Kevin Anderson and Stan Wawrinka have also progressed to the second round. Anderson defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 and Wawrinka got past Ruben Bemelmans 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

In Women's Singles, Karolína Plíšková and Simona Halep entered the second round. Plíšková beat Zhu Lin 6-2, 7-6 and Halep defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-4, 7-5.

In another match, Cori Guaff served up the perfect

excuse for playing hooky from school on Monday as the 15-year-old American caused one of the biggest shocks in Wimbledon history by dispatching Venus Williams 6-4 6-4 in the first round on Monday.

Naomi Osaka’s bid to win a third Grand Slam title came to a premature end when she lost to Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, 7-6(4), 6-2 in the first round of The Championships on Monday.

The 21-year-old Japanese said she had felt a weight lifted from her after losing her No.1 World ranking but it did not show against a talented opponent on Centre Court.

Indeed Putintseva simply franked the form from the recent Birmingham tournament where she had beaten the US Open and Australian Open champion in the second round.
