Inter Miami has confirmed that captain Lionel Messi has extended his stay with the club, signing a deal until the end of the 2028 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Messi, who had joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, has helped Inter Miami climb up the ranks in MLS. He has scored 29 league goals this season and helped his side finish third in the Eastern Conference and qualify for the playoffs.

Messi had previously hinted that Inter Miami could turn out to be his final club ever as he winds down his illustrious career. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner was also able to spark new interest in the league, and in the David Beckham-owned team.

"Inter Miami CF announced today it has signed Club captain, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup Champion, Leo Messi, to a contract extension running through the 2028 Major League Soccer (MLS) season," read the statement from the club.

Messi said that he was elated to remain

with the club and hoping to play at Inter Miami's new stadium, Freedom Park. The Argentine maestro also said he has been happy since arriving at the club and is glad to extend his stay with the side.

“It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality — playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park. Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here.

We’re all really excited about the moment when we can finally play at Miami Freedom Park. We can’t wait for it to be finished — to experience it from the inside, in our new home, and for the fans to enjoy it as well. It’s going to be something very special to play at home in such a spectacular stadium.” said Messi from the new stadium site.

Messi will now gear up to help his side in the first round of the MLS Playoffs, where they face Nashville SC.
