Legendary Bengal footballer Surajit Sengupta on Thursday passed away after losing his battle to Covid-19. He was 70. Sengupta, a decorated former East Bengal captain, was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on January 23. Despite showing signs of recovery, the footballer succumbed to the virus.

Sengupta's passing away comes a month after another East Bengal legend Subhas Bhowmick died.

Sengupta holds the distinction of playing for all 3 Kolkata clubs. The winger was part of the East Bengal squad that won the IFA Shield in 1975, hammering Mohun Bagan 5-0. He had scored in that match.

He began his career with Mohun Bagan in 1973 before playing for Mohammedan Sporting and East Bengal.

Sengupta was also part of India national football team which won a bronze in the Asian Games in 1970.
