In what may be Novak Djokovic’s final appearance at Wimbledon, the Serbian great fell to a straight-sets defeat against Jannik Sinner in the 2025 semi-final, losing 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. With the stunning win, Sinner advanced to his maiden Wimbledon final, where he will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on July 13 at SW19.
The 23-year-old Italian not only booked a place in Sunday’s showpiece but also etched his name alongside tennis greats. With this result, Sinner became the fifth to reach the final of all four Grand Slam tournaments since 1995, joining the elite company of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Djokovic himself.
Adding to the historic nature of his victory, Sinner also became only the second player after Nadal to defeat Djokovic five consecutive times, which is phenomenal to
say the least. He also became the second youngest to qualify for all four Grand Slam finals after Jim Courier.
Notably, the Serbian was suffering from a leg injury and even the medics attended to him in the middle. The veteran even called off practice before the semi-final and there were doubts if he was 100% fit for the marquee clash. After losing the first two sets, Djokovic attempted to script a comeback, winning three back-to-back games, but Sinner eventually got the job done, ruining the chances of the 24 GS winner.
“It's amazing, it shows I'm growing as a player on all surfaces, which is important, trying to keep going and working. I struggled a lot five years ago when I started on this surface. I couldn't really move very well but now I'm moving much better,” Sinner said after the win.
