Virat Kohli can become the first Asian captain to win more than 2 Tests in Australia when India take on the hosts in the day-night Test in the Border-Gavaskar series opener in Adelaide from December 17.

Kohli though, will get just one shot at the record on this tour as he will be returning home after the 1st Test to be with his pregnant wife Anushka Sharma.

Kohli is already the first Asian captain to win a Test series in Australia when India last toured in 2018-19. They won the first Test at Adelaide and the third in Melbourne to create history Down Under.

Kohli is currently level with former India skipper Bishen Singh Bedi and ex-Pakistan captain Mushtaq Mohammad with 2 wins each. Both the former players registered 2 wins from 5 Tests while Kohli and the same from 6 games.

Bedi's Indian team had defeated Australia in the third and fourth Test of the 5-match series on their 1977-78 tour Down Under. Mushtaq Mohammad's Pakistan team registered wins in the 1977 Sydney Test and the 1979 Melbourne Test.

Virat Kohli is

also on the verge of surpassing some magical numbers by arguably two of the greatest ever batsmen to walk on the face of earth - Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.

Kohli is just 179 runs shy of matching former West Indies captain Brian Lara's tally of 610 runs, the most at the Adelaide Oval by a non-Australian player. Lara averaged 76.25 with 2 hundreds and as many fifties in his 4 matches at the venue.

Kohli has played 3 matches at the Adelaide Oval, scoring 431 runs at an average of 71.83. The swashbuckling right-hander has reached the three-figure mark every time he has crossed the tally of fifty at this venue.

Kohli meanwhile, is also in line to break Tendulkar's record for the most Test hundreds by an Indian batsman in Australia. The former India No. 4 smashed 6 hundreds from the 20 matches he played in the Kangaroo nation, amassing 1,809 runs at an average of 53.2.

Kohli also has 6 hundreds from just 12 Test outings in Australia. The current India No. 4 has scored 1,274 runs at an average of 55.39 from his 12 matches.
