French Open 2020 saw a major upset on Thursday as 2nd seed Karolina Pliskova was ousted by former champion Jelena Ostapenko in the women's singles second-round match. Pliksova lasted just an hour and 9 minutes as Ostapenko clinched a straight sets -- 6-4,6-2 win in their clash at Roland Garros.

Pliskova, who had headed into the tournament on the back of an appearance in the final of Italian Open last week, had also stuggled in the French Open opener with quite a few unforced errors against Egyptian qualifiier Mayar Sheriff.

Ostapenko, who had won the title in 2017 as an unseeded player, said she was happy with her range of strokes against Pliskova.

"I was just trying to play my game, but I knew I had to return well today because she obviously has, like, one of the best serves on tour, Ostapenko said, as quoted by Reuters.

"I think I was returning very well today. Also, I had to hold my serve, which I did pretty good. Also to use some drop shots, because it's a very good shot in these conditions."

Meanwhile, America's Sofia Kenin, who won the Australian Open earlier this year, reached the 3rd round with a comeback from behind win (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) over Romania's Anna Bogdan on Thursday. Kenin, the best American hope at Roland Garros along with last year's semi-finalist Amanda Anisimova after Serena Williams withdrew injured on Wednesday, was out of sorts in the opening set before finding her range.

The Australian Open champion struggled to handle Bogdan's cross-court backhands at first, but once she gained control of the rallies the tide turned completely.

However, Kenin had trouble finishing the contest off at 5-1 as Bogdan saved three match points to survive for another game, which the American then bagged with a forehand winner on her fourth match point.
