A 24-year-old security guard from Kenya died at the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Tuesday after a serious fall at the Lusail Stadium, the tournament organisers said on Wednesday. The security guard was on duty while he suffered the nasty fall and even after the medical teams rushed to the spot to provide emergency treatment, he died at the hospital.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy of Qatar World Cup said John Njau Kibue suffered the fall on December 10 and he was transferred to Hamad Medical Hospital's intensive care unit via ambulance.

"We regret to announce that, despite the efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away in hospital on Tuesday 13 December, after being in the intensive care unit for three days," the statement said.

"His next of kin have been informed. We send our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends

during this difficult time."

The organisers said they are investigating the circumstances leading to the fall "as a matter of urgency" and would provide further information pending the outcome of the investigation.

"We will also ensure that his family receives all outstanding dues and monies owed," the statement added.

The Lusail Stadium has been hosting some of the most important matches at the World Cup and it will also host the big final, for which Argentina qualified after beating former finalists Croatia. France and Morocco battle in the second semi-final later on Wednesday.
