It was his 32nd win in 33 matches in 2020 and kept him on course for a second French Open title following his 2016 triumph, and 18th career major.
 
Earlier, Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy also won before rain suspended play on the outside courts.
 
The 2019 US Open semi-finalist defeated Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.
 
Russian 13th seed Andrey Rublev came back from the brink to beat American Sam Querrey in five sets.
 
In Women's Singles, teenage Danish qualifier Clara Tauson defeated 21st seed Jennifer Brady of America 6-4 3-6 9-7 in the opening round.
 
In another Women's Singles match, Czech second seed Karolina Pliskova beat Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of the tournament.
 
In the second round, former world number one Pliskova will meet Jelena Ostapenko who secured her first French Open victory since lifting the trophy in 2017 after defeating American Madison Brengle 6-2, 6-1.
