The Bangladesh government has appointed former captain Tamim Iqbal as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), following the dissolution of the Aminul Islam-led BCB board of directors. At 37, Tamim becomes the youngest president in BCB history and will head an 11-member ad-hoc committee.

The committee features former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin and ex-cricketer and TV commentator Athar Ali Khan. Other members include Rashna Imam, Mirza Yeasir Abbas, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khasru, Tanjil Chowdhury, Salman Ispahani, Rafiqul Islam, and Fahim Sinha. Tamim's appointment follows recommendations from a five-member investigation committee that examined allegations related to last year’s BCB elections.

The investigation committee presented its findings in a press briefing at the sports ministry, detailing irregularities in the BCB election process. Aminul Ehsan, sports director at the National Sports Council (NSC), confirmed that the existing board was not formed properly and was unable to function effectively.

“As part of the National Sports Council's responsibility, we have informed the ICC that this board of

directors was not formed in a proper manner, and is not able to complete its work in a proper manner,” Aminul Ehsan said. He added that the NSC had notified the ICC of the decision to dissolve the board and expressed confidence that the ICC would support the move.

Despite the upheaval, Aminul Islam stated on Sunday that he intended to continue as BCB chief. His stance comes after the probe committee submitted its report to the Government of Bangladesh, highlighting alleged malpractice and abuse of power during last year’s board elections.

The BCB has faced growing pressure from the sports ministry over concerns about the legitimacy of the previous elections, Bangladesh’s absence from the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and accusations of political interference and favouritism within the board.

In response to the turmoil, four directors resigned last week, bringing the total number of resignations since January to six. The changes signal ongoing instability within the board’s governance structure.

Tamim played 70 Tests, 243 ODIs and 78 T20Is for Bangladesh and is expected to usher in a new era in Bangladesh cricket.
