New Zealand batter Suzie Bates, on Friday, February 17, became only the third batter after Virat Kohli and Mahela Jayawardene to score 1000 runs in all T20 World Cups.

Bates achieved the feat in the White Ferns’ Group A match against Nigar Sultana Joty’s Bangladesh at the Newlands in Cape Town.

The 37-year-old also became the first batter to score over 1000 runs in the Women’s T20 World Cup. The veteran was at her very best against the Tigresses. After being put in to bat first, New Zealand racked up a massive score of 189 for the loss of three wickets.

Bates failed to get going in the matches against Meg Lanning’s New Zealand and Sune Luus’ South Africa. Against the Aussies, she got out for a golden duck after

fast bowler Megan Schutt accounted for her wicket.

Bates stayed unbeaten on 81 runs off 61 balls with the help of seven fours and one six against Bangladesh. She set the platform for her team after a partnership of 77 runs for the opening wicket along with Bernadine Bezuidenhout.

Even as wickets kept falling at the other end, Bates made sure of batting until the very end. In 35 T20 World Cup matches, Bates scored 1010 runs at an average of 31.56 and a strike-rate of 114.12 with a top score of an unbeaten 94.

Recently, she also registered for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). But she didn’t find a buyer. Bates also happens to be the all-time leading run-scorer in the history of Women’s T20Is.
