India have been dealt a blow in the ongoing first Test against South Africa as captain Shubman Gill is likely to miss the remainder of the match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata due to a neck injury. On Day 2, Gill left the field after scoring just four runs in the first innings and was taken to the hospital for further examination.

The Indian skipper suffered an acute neck sprain while attempting a sweep off South Africa’s spinner Simon Harmer. He initially received treatment in the dressing room, wearing a neck collar. Sources from the Indian camp confirmed that Gill experienced discomfort and restricted movement in his neck following the

innings.

The situation appeared more serious later on Saturday when he was seen being taken to hospital with his neck secured in a cervical collar.

On medical advice, he will remain under observation, with further tests planned to assess the severity of the injury and determine the necessary treatment.

Speaking after Day 2, bowling coach Morne Morkel did not comment on the severity of the injury.

“Yeah, I think we first need to determine how he got the neck stiffness, maybe just a bad night's sleep. I don't think it's, or we can put it down to the load,” Morkel said.
