India captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from the Kolkata hospital where he was taken on Saturday evening following a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa. Gill has now returned to the team hotel, and early medical assessments are encouraging. He is stable, able to walk and move his neck, and the pain that initially alarmed the support staff has reduced significantly.

For now, Gill will remain under close observation at the team hotel, with doctors and the BCCI medical unit monitoring his progress. Whether he travels with the squad for the second Test in Guwahati remains uncertain, and his availability will hinge on how well he responds to rest and treatment in the coming days.

Gill was ruled

out of the remainder of the first Test after a worrying incident late on Day 2. Walking in after the drinks break, he defended his first ball from Simon Harmer before slog-sweeping the next for a boundary. But the power of the shot seemed to trigger a whiplash-like jerk. Gill immediately reached for the back of his neck, clearly in pain, and struggled to move his head. The physio rushed in, and after just three balls, the India captain retired hurt. Later that evening, he was taken to hospital wearing a cervical collar as a precaution.

It remains to be seen whether Gill can recover in time for the second Test in Guwahati, starting November 22, where India will hope for themselves to make a turnaround and avoid a series defeat.
