Former Indian coach and Mumbai cricket legend Ravi Shastri will be honoured at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 8. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will unveil the Ravi Shastri Stand and dedicate stadium gates to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulji at the iconic ground.
The ceremony will be attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. MCA President Ajinkya Naik, members of the Apex Council, officials and prominent figures from the cricketing community will also be present. The MCA’s Apex Council approved the proposal in its February meeting.
The Level 1 Stand beneath the Press Box at Wankhede Stadium will be named the Ravi Shastri Stand. This acknowledges Shastri’s significant contributions to Mumbai and Indian cricket as a player, captain and coach.
Gate No. 3, Gate No. 5 and Gate No. 6 will be unveiled as the Dilip Sardesai Gate, Diana Edulji Gate and Eknath Solkar Gate respectively. These dedications pay tribute to Mumbai stalwarts who left a lasting impact on
the game.
Shastri played 80 Tests and 150 One Day Internationals for India. He also led India to memorable Test series victories against Australia in 2019 and 2021 as head coach.
MCA president Ajinkya Naik described the ceremony as a proud moment for Mumbai cricket. “This ceremony marks a proud moment for Mumbai cricket as we come together on 9th April to honour these iconic figures. The unveiling of the Ravi Shastri Stand, along with the dedication of stadium gates to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulji, reflects our deep respect for their invaluable contributions. We look forward to celebrating their legacy at Wankhede Stadium while inspiring future generations to uphold the same values and strive for greatness.”
The MCA has previously honoured Rohit Sharma at Wankhede Stadium in recognition of his contributions to Indian cricket. The initiative to commemorate these cricketing greats reinforces Mumbai’s rich sporting heritage and the role of Wankhede as a landmark in Indian cricket.
